WCHS Vocal Music Students Perform Strongly at District Contest
Story By: Izzy Jaynes
Members from the vocal music department competed in the Solo and Small Ensemble contest that was hosted at Lee’s Summit West this past Friday, March 10.
There were four soloists that received an Exemplary (1) rating and qualified for the state competition that will be in Columbia, Missouri. Those soloists included juniors Jose Mendoza, Savanah Malam, and Shaun Anderson. Freshman, Lucy Lankford also qualified for state.
“This is so exciting because after all my hardwork, I get to see a positive outcome,” said Malam.
There are also three small ensembles that will be moving on to state. The Pangelinan sextet (Kaitlyn Pangelinan, Makenzy Magel, Isabelle Jaynes, Luisa Matamoros Torres, Savanah Malam, Skyler Corbett), the Pangelinan Mixed Octet (Savanah Malam, Isabelle Jaynes, Luisa Matamoros Torres, Taniela Faletau, Ikaika Kahananui, Kishon HoChee, Jose Mendoza, Kaitlyn Pangelinan), and the Freshmen Women’s Octet (Lucy Lankford, Emily Bryant, Lilly Marker, Kierra Viets, Emily Magel, Zoey Ramel, Michcala Snider, Olivia Tali).
The Freshmen Women’s Octet was the first freshmen ensemble to move on to state since choral director, Ron Patch, has been at Chrisman.
The vocal music students spent around two months preparing for this contest. There was a lot of time and effort that were put in for the goal of mastering the pieces being taken to contest.
“I’m so relieved that all my hard work paid off.” said Mendoza.
