WCHS Musicians Bring Home Several Top Ratings at State Contest
Although the weather was rainy and gloomy, some fortunate students and teachers did not let that stop them from making a day of the 2017 State Music Festival.
The vocal music and instrumental music departments State qualifiers spent this past Friday on the University of Missouri campus, in Columbia, which is where the festival is held every year.
There were three ensembles and four soloist from choir, five soloists from band, as well as one soloist and two duets from orchestra.
The Pangelinan Mixed Eight (Savanah Malam, Isabelle Jaynes, Luisa Matamoros Torres, Taniela Faletau, Ikaika Kahananui. Kishon HoChee, Jose Mendoza, Kaitlyn Pangelinan) , Pangelinan Sextet (Kaitlyn Pangelinan, Makenzy Magel, Isabelle Jaynes, Luisa Matamoros Torres, Savanah Malam, Skyler Corbett), and the Lankford Freshman Ensemble (Lucy Lankford, Emily Bryant, Lilly Marker, Kierra Viets, Emily Magel, Zoey Ramel, Michcala Snider, Olivia Tali) all received Exemplary 1 ratings.
The Lankford Freshman Ensemble was also the first Chrisman freshman group to move on to State and to achieve a 1 rating in more than a decade.
The ensembles weren’t the only 1’s that the choral department earned. Soloists, Jose Mendoza, Savanah Malam, and Lucy Lankford received 1 ratings as well.
“It was great! I got to go with an amazing group of people, which helped to make the day even better,” said Malam, on her first year attending State.
Flutist, Maureen Hennessy, french horn players Ally Vaughn and Hannah Noel, and tuba player Sarah Erickson were the band members that achieved an Exemplary 1 rating for their solos..
“I’m very proud of myself,” said Noel.
William Pace, who is a cellist in orchestra, also received an Exemplary 1 rating on his solo.
