The William Chrisman speech and debate team had yet another successful showing at District competition on Friday and Saturday with Kelsey Newland advancing to Nationals in Salt Lake City.
“I’ve been working really hard these past few weeks, qualifying to nationals has been my goal since freshman year, and now that I’ve finally achieved my goal it feels great,” said Newland.
Newland not only qualified to the national tournament but also managed to win the Heart of America District Championship.
Shawn Bunce and Samantha Chance also had success this weekend qualifying to semifinals in both of their events.
“Qualifying to semifinals as a junior gives me a lot of hope for next year. A lot of my competition is graduating and I still believe i have a good chance at qualifying to State,” said Bunce
Senior Claire Cook will also get her chance to qualify to the state tournament next weekend as she fell just short in both of her events of qualifying to nationals.
Cook took 6th place in duo interpretation with partner Joe Day, and 5th in Program Oral Interpretation.
As the season nears an end with only one tournament remaining the Bears prepare to compete at MSHAA district competition.
Both Cook and Bunce Qualified to state competition last season and are hopeful to return to state this year, along with several new faces getting their first shot at district competition.
