The William Chrisman debate team did some of their best work this past weekend competing at Platte County and Park Hill.
Three members of the team took first place in their events, while many others made it to the finals and semifinals in their events.
Nikki Bowman, Shawn Bunce, and Kelsey Newland all placed first in their events, while Josh Hagstrom took fifth place.
“It was a good experience taking first, said Bowman, taking first in my individual event really showed me i can compete in more than just debate.”
Bunce also had similar feelings as Bowman, “I usually succeed more in debate, but with districts coming up this shows i can compete well in both debate and my individual event.”
Newland on the other hand tends to focus on her individual event, and looked to use this tournament as another source of prepping for district competition.
“It's my senior year, so I really hope to qualify to state or nationals, and end my debate career on a good note.” said Newland
Hagstrom on the other hand is just a freshman this year, and has qualified for finals in most of the tournaments he’s competed in.
“I hope to continue debate through high school, and also hope to continue to learn and get better.”
said Hagstrom.
The team looks to continue its success when they compete in the conference tournament February 13th, and continue on to district competition next month.
