Bears Come Out of Kauffman With a Win

The Bears got to experience a once in a lifetime opportunity this Saturday. The Bears took on the Van Horn Falcons in the High School Baseball Classic at Kauffman Stadium, home of the Kansas City Royals.
“It was a great experience playing at the K. It was tough adjusting to the atmosphere and the size of the stadium, but I’m glad we came out with the win,” junior Nick Ross said.
The Falcons have prevailed the last three meetings at Kauffman Stadium, but the outcome would be different in this game.
In a pitchers duel, Chrisman starter Will Fisher and reliever Eli Henderson combined to allow only 3 hits. On the other side of the diamond, Van Horn only allowed five hits.
Timely hitting was key for the Bears, and small-ball played a big role. The Bears jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, drawing walks, hit by pitches, and bunting runners over.
“We did a great job getting runners on base any way we could. Grady and I both got hit by pitches and we drew a lot of walks as a team,” junior Trey Stout said.
Will Fisher was a force on the mound, spotting his pitches and sitting the Van Horn batters down one by one. Fisher only allowed two hits through five innings pitched, then passed on the baton to Henderson to close the game.
“My stuff was really working on the mound. I just tried to do what I could to keep them from getting on base, and it seemed to be working, so I stuck with it,” Fisher said.
Up 3-0 in the top of the seventh, Henderson drove in two runs to add to the lead, giving the Bears a 5 run cushion to work with.
After allowing two runners on base, Henderson got three quick outs to seal the deal for the Bears.
The Bears play in the Eastern Jackson County Tournament this week at Legacy Park. Game times will vary.
