Many students in high school aren't sure of what career they would like to pursue in the future. Most freshmen in college change their majors multiple times until they have found what they truly love to do.
This is not the case for junior Vale Gibson whose love and talent for computer programing is already starting to take her far.
Gibson participates in the Summit Tech program which is an on off-campus experience that offers a software development I and II course.
“Each morning we get laptops out and work with coding. First semester is C++ and second semester is Java. It is very hands-on with instructions and almost no homework.” said Gibson.
This is a full year course and although she misses classes during the time she is at Summit Tech she comes back and jumps right into her other classes, and is even finishing up classes she needs to graduate.
Gibson is currently in Government which is required to graduate and is getting it out of the way to prepare herself for senior year, along with getting the rest of her senior credits through UCM.
She hopes to spend the whole school day at a computer program next year as well.
All of Gibson’s hard work is not going unrecognized as she was a runner up for an award from NCWIT-National Center for Women & Information Technology.
This award was for aspirations in computing for women and is an honor just to be considered for.
Gibson says that she has always liked to use computers and when she took a computer programing class here it made her realize that she might want a career in this field.
Tom Carter is the teacher for computer programing at William Chrisman.
Mr. Carter said Gibson would stay after to finish, was very diligent even if it took longer than others, and really wanted to understand the coding.
“I am really proud of her hard work and it is great to see her carry on with this program.” said Carter
Mr. Carter was really blown away to hear that one of his students was inspired by his class and is even wanting to make a career out of it.
As for Gibson’s plans after high school, the program she is involved with tries to place the students directly into a computer science job, and even finds internships for students.
Gibson has already accomplished quite a bit in the computer programing field, but doesn’t want to stop here.
This award from NCWIT is just the beginning for Gibson, and the determination of her to make a career out of her passion.
