“If you would have told me at the beginning of the season that we would beat Staley and be 6-0 right now I probably wouldn't believe it, but we have changed so much as a team this year, and we really have something special,” said junior defensive end Daniel Carson .
Last Friday night the William Chrisman Bears beat the Number 3 ranked Staley Falcons 43-39, skyrocketing the bears into the top 5 of the state, and putting them in the driver's seat on the road to a conference championship.
Not only did the Bears, who are now No. 5 in Missouri Class 5, put themselves in a good position for the remainder of the season, but they also made history that night, as no Bears team has started 6-0 since 1975. The Bears' last winning seaosn was 1980.
Senior quarterback James Bailey played a big role in the win over Staley rushing for over 200 yards, passing for over 150 yards, and scoring a total of 5 times on the night.
“I knew I had to make some big plays that night.” said Bailey “with the way the line, and receivers played that night, I didn’t have to think I was able to just go out and play football.” said Bailey
Juniors Emori Thomas and Daniel Carson lead the defense to a big second and third quarter in which the Bears were able to lock up an elite Staley offense who came into the game averaging over 35 points per game.
The two accounted for 25 tackles and 5 sacks on the night. “We made some key stops when we needed to, and we are still continuing to improve.” said Carson
And as the bears continue to improve they prepare to play North Kansas City, who beat the Bears last season on Homecoming night.
“They spoiled our homecoming last year, so they decided to make our team their homecoming game this year, we want them to feel like we did last year and come out with a win Friday night “ said senior center Trey Stout.
