New Basketball Coach Looks to Make Strides in First Season
Story By: Cheyanne Thorpe
Coming from Summit Christian Academy (SCA), Jacob Kates, the new boys basketball coach for Chrisman hopes to change the culture for the team.
Kates says, “We want to win, I think we’re gonna be successful and I want to build a culture of success and the way we do things on and off the court, and add value to Chrisman,“
As Kates was at Summit academy for 15 years, coming to Chrisman was a big adjustment.
“I was at the school for 15 years, it's where my kids go and my wife teaches, and there was only 250 students there,” says Kates.
Kates played a major role at SCA.
“I started the program there, I was the athletic director and started every sports team.”
Although Kates enjoyed his time at SCA, he was ready to accept the new opportunity that Chrisman held for him and his career.
“It's a new challenge I am looking forward to, I was ready to make the jump into public education, and it is closer to my background.”
Kates early impressions of his players were positive. He felt that the athletes were very coachable and hard workers and he saw that the players had a drive to win.
The players believe that coach Kates will be a big part of achieving their wins.
Kates boys basketball team last season at SCA held a record of 19-7, while Chrisman boys basketball record was 6-18 .
“I think he is great and gonna be a big part of why we are going to win,” sophomore Isaiah Jackson says
Not only do they want to win, but the players want to also become a family and improve each other. This upcoming season holds a lot of excitement for the boys basketball team, the varsity season starts November 21st as they go against Park Hill South.
