Movie Reivew: Ratchet and Clank
Story By: Gabriel Spaulding
When the galaxy is threatened by a mysterious and powerful villain known as Chairman Drek (Paul Giamatti) and his intimidating henchman, Victor Von Ion (Sylvester Stallone), Ratchet (James Arnold Taylor) and his newly found friend, Clank (David Kaye) spring into action to save the day.
From Playstation and Sony Interactive comes a film adaptation of classic 2002 video game Ratchet & Clank. This film adaptation revolves around Drek, his minions, and his plans to blow up different planets throughout the cosmos to create his perfect planet.
This movie is truly nostalgic to the audience that had played the classic game many years ago. To contribute to this nostalgia factor is the return of classic characters, such as Drek, Captain Qwark (Jim Ward), and Dr. Nefarious (Armin Shimerman). It’s a very family friendly movie that could introduce this classic series of games to a younger audience, and even had somewhat of an unexpected movie (for a children’s movie).
However, it was, of course, flawed. This film seemed to follow a very predictable formula throughout most of the movie. This can be shown by the movie’s start, where the main protagonist suddenly achieves his seemingly unachievable dreams of becoming a Galactic Ranger with a rather sudden turn of events, and everyone is left in awe. The characters felt way too one-sided as well, even if this film was made for children.
Looking over all the details, this film can be considered exemplary out of all films of it’s kind - video game to movie adaptations. It was flawed, but that was to be expected of a movie of a childlike nature, and it earns a few nostalgia points. The overall rating for this movie is a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
