Bears Tennis Hosts First Tournament

This past Friday, the William Chrisman tennis program hosted itsinaugural Varsity tournament. Coaches, Jason Grubb and Jon Landrum, worked hard to ensure that everything ran smoothly.
Fort Osage, North Kansas City, Belton, Lee’s Summit, Oak Park, Ray Pec, Platte County and of course Chrisman’s very own varsity team spent the day at Santa Fe Park competing for not only team awards, but individuals as well.
“The tournament was a great experience for players to compete in singles and doubles all day. I want to get Truman involved next year to add more rivalries to the matches,” said Coach Grubb
Throughout the day, players took part in around 8 matches, half of those being doubles and half singles.
Chrisman was by far the youngest team that attended, with four sophomores and two juniors making up the varsity team.
Many of the girls went up against seniors who had years of experience, but the team fought hard throughout the whole day. It was a learning experience for all involved.
“The tournament was great! It was super nice outside and we were kept pretty busy. It was a lot of fun getting to hang out with my girls,” said junior and varsity four player, Juliet Anderson.
The team of Anderson and Atlanta Petty took third place.
“The tournament was a lot of fun and so was getting to play a lot of doubles. I had a good partner and I think we did pretty well,” said sophomore and varsity three player, Allison Cook.
The team of Cook and Celeste Cummins took sixth place.
“I think Izzy [Jaynes] and I struggled a little bit in the beginning. We went against a lot of really good players, especially playing at the top of varsity, but we were able to pull out some wins by the end of the day,” said sophomore and varsity one player, Katie Schaeffer.
The team of Schaeffer and Jaynes took seventh place.
Varsity will compete in another tournament on Saturday, September 10th at Winnetonka and will continue to improve and grow as tennis players this season.
With no seniors graduating this year, there are high expectations for the girl’s tennis program and high expectations for the William Chrisman varsity tournament next year
