Season Coverage over Boys' Basketball
By: Haden Long
Hard work in the gym and the classroom has paid off for the Chrismans Boys' basketball team. Not only did they go into winter break with a 7-2 record, but they’ve also asserted their dominance in the classroom with a team GPA of 3.54 and eight players with a 4.0 or higher for first semester.
Those eight players include Trey Kates, Dayne Herl, Ralph Covington, Connor Adkins, Ethan Dias, Cameron Dickerson, Dayton Dockins, and Leo Henderson. On the court success is always a focus, but success in the classroom is what Head Coach Jake Kates says is most important.
“Student first, then athlete,” he said. “Some will go play ball at the next level, some of them won't. Either way, what they take away from the classroom will stick with them the rest of their lives. It's important for them to learn the responsibilities of being a good student because it will show in their character later in their adult life.”
Their knowledge from the classroom seems to be spilling onto the court as well.
“We're able to trust each other's knowledge for the game this year, making it easier for us to trust each other late in games and execute when we need to.” Said Senior Guard Cameron Dickerson.
And their play on the floor reflects that. They continue to come out victorious in close games, and have boosted their record to 14-5 since Christmas break. Achievements like these are something that shouldn't go unrecognized, and no one could be prouder than Coach Kates.
“The group of kids we have here are really special, and this is just another reason why,” Kates said. He then continued by saying “I’m very proud to be coaching these boys, it’s not every year you get a group of players with the IQ these guys do.”
Not only does it represent the players well, but it also represents Chrisman in a way otherschools in the district can't.
“It's awesome to represent Chrisman in such a good way, and being a role model for other students. I hope this motivates student athletes to keep working hard in and out of the classroom and keep the culture we set this year going.” Senior Center Connor Adkins said.
