Orchestra Earns One at State Contest
Story By Kishon Ho Chee
Chrisman’s orchestra students went to their state large ensemble competition on Thursday April 7th and did exceptionally well.
Symphonic orchestra performed well and received an superior 1 rating overall.
For seniors, this was their last year and last chance to perform well and receive a one at state.
“I've been in symphonic three years, and we’ve received a one all those years, however it's always nerve racking going into contest, especially state.” Said senior Aaron Upton, “But it felt good knowing our hard work paid off.”
The one rating also meant a lot for those who competed for their first time with symphonic.
“I was extremely nervous because it was my first year in symphonic, but seeing that we got a one made me feel awesome.” said junior Darryl Shaw
This may not have for sure implications for next year, however Chrisman’s orchestra knows their improved and can only get better from here.
“I’m excited for next year!” said Shaw “We’ve improved so much this year to get that one at contest and although we’re losing some key seniors, we can make even more improvements for next year and get to where we are now or even surpass where we are as a collective ensemble”
Symphonic orchestra has always found ways to improve on their sound and how to work together.
“We made major improvements, especially considering that our pre-contest concert wasn’t the best we’ve sounded.” said senior Erika Hernandez “We wanted to sound our best for contest and we knew that the contest was not our best sound or our best effort”
For other students, they viewed the pre-contest concert as a good experience.
“I felt as though the concert before contest was a good motivator for us,” said junior Luisa Matamoros “Although we did struggle during the concert, it helped us really know what we needed to work on to get the one that we wanted.”
Chrisman’s orchestra director was very proud of her ensemble’s performance and work ethic.
“The students worked really hard in class and symphonic especially this year had amazing senior leadership and focus to really work hard and get better.” Says Melissa Guillory. “If our students continue to work and hard and practice, and really get excited about performing, we can continue to get the one’s we really are capable of receiving if we continue with the work ethic from this year.”
