The Ever Constant Impact of Covid on Performance Classes
By Autumn Garrett
Events cancelled or substantially altered. Classes separated alphabetically right down the middle. A whirlwind of different feelings.
Of all classes, none have been affected by this year’s Covid restrictions more than the performance-based classes - theatre, competitive debate and drama, orchestra, band and choir. With Covid restrictions constantly changing, performance classes rely on some of the restricted things like social interaction, the events that have been canceled, and the hybrid system restricting the amount of practice time each class has. It is becoming more obvious how hard it is not to be caught in the chaotic storm of 2020.
¨It has been difficult, but everybody is working hard to keep moving forward,¨ said Daisy Amparon, a sophomore in choir.
Choir, band and orchestra all have made changes to keep students safe. One change includes the concerts that are being moved from the auditorium to the large gym, making these classes and the students in them work harder than ever for each concert.

¨Performing in the gym isn't as good because it doesn't have the sound barriers and it to me doesn't have good acoustics so it's harder to hear us and hear all of the other parts that are playing with us. We try to make the best out of the gym for now until we can go back to the auditorium,¨ said Kayla Marshall, a senior in orchestra member.
Right alongside this change are the difference in tournaments for competitive drama and debate. Usually held at different high schools, the tournaments are now being held at William Chrisman only unlike previous years. The students are split up into different rooms to maintain social distance between the students for their own safety. This can make things harder if they have partners that they perform with. |

When asked about the biggest impact, John Griffith, a Junior competing in drama and debate - said, ¨[it would] definitely be the split up teams in the tournaments. It can get depressing without the rest of the team with you.¨
It can be tough when it seems like there are more changes and obstacles than victories. Some may feel discouraged or may have trouble seeing the fun from previous years.
¨With COVID, it hasn’t been as much fun anymore. Other students have slowly dropped out and it’s sad seeing all this happen,¨ said Allen Gentry, a sophomore in band.
We all have to stick together and look at how many challenges the school and district have overcome these past few months in school. To use Amparon’s words from before, ¨we have to keep moving forward this year, no matter how hard or frustrating it may be.¨
Just remember that we are all in this together and we will overcome any challenge that can be thrown William Chrisman's way.
