With the first day of practices falling on October 31st, the Winter sports season officially under way. The girl’s basketball team is making progress and improvements in preparation for their upcoming games.
The girl’s basketball team is led by Coach Scott Schaefer. He doesn’t do it alone though. JV is coached by Kendra Cooper and the freshman team is coached by Chris Wells.
The season jamboree for both varsity and jv was held on November 17th. The team got a chance to show off the results of all the time and effort they have put into practices, coaches and athletes alike.
Schaefer wants to see the seniors provide leadership and wants to see the whole team come closer this year.
“I would like to see our older players step up and help out some of the new players on the team,” said Schaefer.
Senior, Sarah Erikson, hopes to fulfill coach Schaefer’s wishes. Erikson says that in previous years she was more focused on herself throughout the season, but this year she wants to focus more on helping others improve and she wants to ensure that a sense of family is created on the team.
The girls basketball team will be seeing some tougher competition than they have in past seasons, but that doesn’t mean that their goals for the season have changed. Coach Wells would love to see varsity take a state title this year. He also hopes to prepare jv and the freshmen team for state title winning seasons in the future.
The first official season game will be held on Monday, November 21st. Varsity and jv will be going against Park Hill South.
The freshman team won’t see their first game until Monday, November 28th when they go against Raytown South.
Schaefer is also hoping that during games this season, there will be no lapse in the quality of playing. He wants them to keep their head in the game and remain focused on the court for the entirety of the game.
Sophomore Rylee LaRoche says that she is excited to “push herself” and play to “her full potential”. She intends to give this season all she’s got.
