The 2016 tennis season has officially come to an end for the girls tennis program. Junior Varsity ended their season with a match against Fort Osage, while varsity wrapped up their season with districts last week.
Last week started with team districts on Monday night against Blue Springs. Although the Bears did not come out triumphant in the overall match, they did achieve one win in doubles. Which has never happened in Coach Jason Grubb’s years of coaching.
Doubles pairing, Juliette Anderson and Nicole Eppert won against the number three doubles pairing from Blue Springs.
The week ended with individual districts all day on Friday. Individual districts were hosted by Grain Valley. Although, no one will be moving on to sectionals or state, the team gained experience and continued to put work in.
That has been the tone for the whole season, it was a growing season. With seven seniors that graduated last year and no seniors this year, the team was very young and featured four sophomores on varsity.
The girls tennis team finished the season with a record 4-10. That included a win against Fort Osage at the end of the season after losing to them at the beginning of the season.
“I am very pleased with the growth of our team this season. We were incredibly young and inexperienced in comparison to our competition but we played a majority of our team duals in high tension points,” said Grubb, when reflecting on the season.
Both coaches and athletes alike have high hopes and goals for the 2017 season.
Sophomore Katie Schaefer, who played Varsity 1 wants to work to improve her serve and just over all game.
“Next season, I look forward to more consistent serves and a tenacity that comes with experience. I'm also looking forward to our girls battling for our first ever conference/district titles. We should make a deeper run toward district and state competitiveness,” said Grubb.
Anderson, who played Varsity 5, looks forward to gaining more experience as a team and to watching the younger players grow.
Grubb calls the team “one of the most exciting young teams in the area,” and sends out a warning to other teams, “Don't sleep on our team, as we'll be really good next season,”
