The Revenant Proves to be a Total Experience
Story By: Gabriel Spaulding
When a frontiersman (Leonardo DiCaprio) is attacked by a grizzly bear, abandoned by his men, and is on the verge of death, he must struggle to survive in the harsh Northern winter.
Directed by Alejandro González Iñárritu, this is a very powerful and gruesome tale of loss, hardship, and survival in harsh and seemingly unbearable conditions. Hugh Glass must struggle to make it back to his fellow frontiersmen after watching who he thought was an ally (Tom Hardy) kill his son (Forrest Goodluck) and leave him for dead. He overcomes various trials and makes several allies, and eventually exacts his revenge.
This movie definitely had solid pros. It’s lack of many words expresses the raw emotion in every character, and helps create an artistic feel for the movie, something not seen in many modern day movies of the same genre/theme. What one might expect to be a run-of-the-mill action movie is a powerful and moving film.
While it was quite good, it came with a few cons, even if it’s a very little amount. One of these few cons includes the fact that the movie lacks a proper ending. Also, while this isn’t too important, the bear attack scene didn’t seem quite as gruesome as the results would lead you to believe it would be. These downsides are clearly outweighed by the incredible amount of pros in the film.
This felt like more than a movie, rather, an experience, and deserves to be treated as such. It was a powerful and moving piece of artwork that should be seen by all that can see it. This film deserves a solid 4.5 out of 5 stars.
