WCHS Instrumental Music Students Excel at District Contest
Story By: Izzy Jaynes
Members of William Chrisman’s band and orchestra had a strong showing on Saturday at Lee’s Summit West for the District Instrumental Solo and Small Ensemble contest.
Seven soloists and three small ensemble earned the highest rating of Exemplary (I), earning the opportunity to attend State contest later this spring, in Columbia, Missouri. Those soloists included tuba player Sarah Erikson, trumpeters Caleb Ferguson and Destiny White-Dixon, flutist Maureen Hennessy, french horn players Hannah Noel and Ally Vaughn and cellist William Pace.
Along with the soloists, there were three string duets that received an Exemplary (1) rating. Those duos were Darryl Shaw with Sam Wimberly, Lindsay Sanders with Tamara Sanders, and Joshua Hagstrom with Ikaika Kahananui.
Among that group, there were many underclassmen. Noel, who is only a freshman, described the experience as being “very exciting.” While sophomore Hennessy said “I’m young and showed that I have the experience and skill for state qualification.”
Junior, White-Dixon is very satisfied with her performance and feels that her “three years of hard work have paid off.”
