The William Chrisman boys basketball team is on a climb for the 2017-18 season and they have left people on the edge of their seats waiting to see where their success takes them.
The season did not start off well as far as wins, and close games that did not turn into victories, but that changed in the game against Truman High School. Winning the Three Trails Trophy, was the first of seven wins in their next 11 games.
The players chalk up their improvement this season to a couple of factors.
“We have been looking at our goals this season and trying to meet them knowing that it is a process,” junior Bryan Cox said.
“Teamwork and competing everyday at practice has helped us,” says junior Kelvyn Mason.
As the season has progressed, the players say that their most improved skill is defense, and the atmosphere of the team has changed for the better.
“We are a lot more positive, and we work together,” Senior Daniel Carson says.
The coaches say they notice progress in specific areas.
“A lot of our success this year deals with players work ethic, and we are are focused more on team wins,” says assistant coach Eric Regier, who is in his third year as an assistant coach with the boys team.
“I have seen a lot of progress in my sophomores specifically,” first year head coach Jacob Kates says.
As the team has advanced this season, players have bettered certain skills, but there is still always room for improvement.
“Late game focus, and making winning plays at the right time. They are good at having great defensive effort and playing selfishly on offense.” says Regier.
Even with less than a third of the season remaining, the coaches still expect more wins and success for their players.
“We are just now starting to turn the corner and hope to win districts, and make a run to the playoffs,” says Kates. “We want to compete for our conference championship. Our goal everyday is to reach our potential at every practice or game.”
