Shorthanded Bears’ Top Rival Fort Osage
Fresh off a rare day off last Friday and two all-day tournaments (Saturday and Monday) to work through the fundamental strokes more, coach Jason Grubb got to see an impressive 6-3 win from his Boys Tennis team against rival Fort Osage.
"This Fort team was much more determined today and had a deeper lineup than they did at the beginning of the season,” Grubb said. “Today, we were the opposite, missing three varsity players at the final rehearsals of Chrisman's One Acts Theater Productions or by injury.”
Grubb was worried that the improved JV play would not translate to the bottom part of varsity, but that was not the case.
“I was pleasantly surprised by the results," said Grubb.
Taniela Faletau won 8-3, Brett Wilson won 8-3, Roman Campa won 8-2, and Dakoda James won 8-1 for varsity singles wins. Faletau and Wilson combined to win 8-2 in #1 doubles and Captain Dakoda James paired with young Freshman Sam Hawley to win at #2 varsity doubles 8-4.
"Brett and Roman are playing better than ever. Dakoda keeps gritting out matches and Taniela's getting back to the old Taniela who was First Team All-Conference last season. Hopefully, the other players have been watching how these guys have been fighting through this stretch without a practice since Wednesday April 5th."
