Lady Bears Win Belton Varsity Invitational
The William Chrisman girls’ tennis team used strong singles’ and doubles’ play to win the Belton Varsity Invitational on Wednesday.
The Bears finished with 25 teams points, topping several teams, including Ray-Pec and Harrisonville, who tied for second with 21 points.
Juniors Tori Gant and Laurie Dougls led the way for Chrisman, with Gant taking first in A singles and Douglas taking first in B singles.
Coach Jason Grubb was happy with his No. 1 player.
“I was really pleased with Tori Gant focusing on the last few points of her singles matches to grind out points,” he said. “She was the best player out there but it was not her best consistency day so she had to grind out wins.”
Gant was happy because the win made it a repeat.
“It felt good because I was champion from last year,” she said.
For Douglas, the victory was a huge step in reaching her potential.
“It was the best thing that could have happened,” she said.
“The biggest story for us was usual #6 Laurie Douglas winning the B singles bracket after she controlled wins over Fort's #4 and Truman's #3,” Grubb said. “She used that as a successful start to eventually knock off state qualifier Zalewski from Ray-Pec. … Laurie had one heck of a day from an underdog seeding to get 1st place.
In A Doubles, Nicole Eppert and Kiara Ashurst 2-1 to take third and in B Doubles, Emma Place and Hunter Taylor (WC) went 2-1 for 2nd Place
